Greetings all!

Some folks at St. Joseph’s College have asked me (Steve Bridge) if I’d be willing to put on a little presentation here about rock-hounding and gemcutting.  As some of you know, I’m still fairly new to this field, but thought I’d share what I know.  The event will be held here on campus on Wednesday, December 2 at 7PM in Xavier Hall and is open to the public.  It’s titled “Buried Treasure: Findings of an Amateur Geologist and Gemcutter.”  It’ll be a VERY basic introduction to the hobby, with a focus on some of the local mineral types and localities (including some flourscent varieites) and the sorts of things one can do with one’s finds (e.g., gemcutting).  MMGS members are welcome to attend, as I plan to plug the club as well.

OK, the directions are pretty easy.

  • From Portland, head up Route 302 all the way to N. Windham (approx 15 miles).
  • Turn left at Route 35 (there’s a light there).
  • Take Route 35 for 2.3 miles.
  • Turn right onto Whites Bridge Road, and follow that for 1.3 miles.
  • The entrance to St. Joseph’s College will be on your left.
  • Turn in, and just follow that main campus road straight as far as you can go (which will be about a quarter of a mile or so).
  • You’ll pass a big brick academic building on your left (Alfond Hall), and a big recreation center on your right (Alfond Center).
  • You’ll end up at a parking lot.
  • Xavier Hall is the big house-looking structure on your left.
  • Enter the main entrance, and you should see us right there, in the big, first-floor room.

(For those who wish to mapquest it, the college address is 278 Whites Bridge Road, Standish, ME.

Come one, come all–the more the merrier!
